Ever been to a UFO Festival?

My sister moved to Roswell New Mexico a while back. Because she is my sister and also because she knows that I am a seeker of truth, justice and the American way, she has been telling me about the Roswell Alien Festival for the last few years. Every July basements and darkened apartments across the country empty and Roswell New Mexico fills up. Remember the hyper-nerdy guys that played Dungeons and Dragons incessantly for days on end? They all end up in Roswell the first week in July to attend this festival. This "festival" features scholarly lectures on every UFO theory imaginable. There are also alien costume contests, parades and even a few "alien themed" rock bands. The one that stood out to me was called "UFOEtry" you can see their website here. Their music features a "unique synthesis of paranormal, metaphysical and spiritual thinking". I am not rally sure what that means but I am guessing they play music that is pretty weird. There are dioramas of alien autopsies and all manner of freaked out displays.

My sister said that people from all over the place show up and basically inundate the town with crazies for a week and the local stores, gift shops and rumor mills make a little money and everyone is happy. Can you imagine saying to your employer: "I need next week off, I am going to the Roswell UFO Festival". I have worked with some pretty strange people but I have never heard that kind of vacation request. I guess the Roswell chamber of commerce is pretty happy about it all.

I hope one day to go to this event, not to learn or participate but to laugh and take photos of the weird and unusual people that would be at such an event. If I ever go I have a plan. I want to dress up in a dark suit, wear dark sunglasses, place a microphone in my ear, go to one of the lectures, take copious notes, then after it is over go up to people and ask them their name and where they are from. I can guarantee some of the wackos would get pretty crazy pretty fast. Good times!
